Paul Bangay Radio Interviews

"ByDesign" ABC Radio National - 12 October 2011

(Presenter: Alan Saunders)

Today, we meet Paul Bangay, one of Australia's most acclaimed landscape designers. He's a busy man: his life is divided between Australian and overseas commissions and his own garden in Daylesford in Victoria. He has a new book out, Paul Bangay's Guide to Plants.

He talks about his love of geometric perfection, his use of ornaments, the inspiration of Andre Le Notre, who designed the garden of the Chateau de Vaux-le-Vicomte in 1657 and went on to work on the gardens at the Palace of Versailles, and whether there is an Australian style in gardens.

All proceeds suport the Wombat Hill Botanic Gardens Restoration Project Wombat Hill Botanic Gardens, Daylesford, are a remarkably unspoilt example of the historic and culturally significant public gardens established in 19th century Victoria and one of the country's finest pinetums. Formed on Crown Land by donations from the Government Botanist Baron Sir F von Mueller, a design was prepared for it in the gardenesque style by noted Victorian garden designers, Taylor and Sangster, as a place of pleasure as well as scientific importance. In the Gardens' heyday bands entertained visitors in the Rotunda, water cascaded from fountains and a stream trickled through the rustic Fernery - a cool place of enchantment with overhanging foliage leading to a grotto filled with water lilies.

Sadly, the Rotunda, Rustic Cascade, Fernery and even the paths, have all but disappeared. This is an opportunity to restore these elements to their former splendour and their rightful place in the Wombat Hill Botanic Gardens. The Friends of Wombat Hill Botanic Gardens are delighted to announce the support that is to be offered by owners of a number of significant private gardens in the Daylesford area from November 2011 to April 2012. These special gardens will be open to the public as part of a major fundraising effort to restore romantic and unique features of Taylor and Sangster's great landscape and botanic work. This series of garden openings includes some of the Daylesford area's most beautiful and exciting gardens in their seasonal glory. These private gardens are rarely open to the public.
